Portents (De portentis)11 1. Varro defines portents as beings that seem to have been born contrary to nature – but they are not contrary to nature, because they are created by divine will, since the nature of everything is the will of the Creator. Whence even the pagans address God sometimes as ‘Nature’ (Natura), sometimes as ‘God.’
2. A portent is therefore not created contrary to nature, but contrary to what is known nature. Portents are also called signs, omens, and prodigies, because they are seen to portend and display, indicate and predict future events.
3. The term ‘portent’ (portentum) is said to be derived from foreshadowing (portendere), that is, from ‘showing beforehand’ (praeostendere). ‘Signs’ (ostentum), because they seem to show (ostendere) a future event. Prodigies (prodigium) are so called, because they ‘speak hereafter’ (porro dicere), that is, they predict the future. But omens (monstrum) derive their name from admonition (monitus), because in giving a sign they indicate (demonstrare) something, or else because they instantly show (monstrare) what may appear; and this is its proper meaning, even though it has frequently been corrupted by the improper use of writers.
4. Some portents seem to have been created as indications of future events, for God sometimes wants to indicate what is to come through some defects in newborns, and also through dreams and oracles, by which he may foreshadow and indicate future calamity for certain peoples or individuals, as is indeed proved by abundant experience.
5. In fact, to Xerxes a fox born of a mare was a portent for the destruction of the empire. A monster to which a woman gave birth, whose upper body parts were human, but dead, while its lower body parts came from diverse animals, yet were alive, signified to Alexander the sudden murder of the king – for the worse parts had outlived the better ones. However, those monsters that are produced as omens do not live long – they die as soon as they are born.
6. There is a difference between a ‘portent’ (portentum) and ‘an unnatural being’ (portentuosus). Portents are beings of transformed appearance, as, for instance, is said to have happened when in Umbria a woman gave birth to a serpent. Whence Lucan says (Civil War 1.563): And the child terrified its own mother. But an unnatural being strictly speaking takes the form of a slight mutation, as for instance in the case of someone born with six fingers.
7. Portents, then, or unnatural beings, exist in some cases in the form of a size of the whole body that surpasses common human nature, as in the case of Tityos who, as Homer witnesses, covered nine jugers (i.e. about six acres) when lying prostrate; in other cases in the form of a smallness of the whole body, as in dwarfs (nanus), or those whom the Greeks call pygmies (pygmaeus), because they are a cubit tall. Others are so called due to the size of parts of their bodies, as for instance a misshapen head, or due to superfluous parts of their limbs, as in the case of two-headed and three-headed individuals, or in the case of the cynodontes (i.e. “dog-toothed” people), who have a pair of projecting fangs. Earthquake, hail, fierce rain rattle Bay Area — but, nope, there’s no link
Hello, Monday! A 3.9 magnitude quake jolted the South Bay this morning, in an area notorious for seismic restlessness, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Around 9:40 a.m., just after San Jose residents experienced hail, torrential rain and thunderous dark clouds, the earth beneath them suddenly shifted. The 3.9 quake was centered about nine miles northeast of downtown San Jose, in the Alum Rock region. Tremors were felt in Milpitas, Fremont and Santa Clara, the USGS reported. Office towers shook in downtown San Jose.
“It was snowing and hailing, with thunder, then there was an earthquake. It felt like a big jerk, not rolling,” said Angel Barlow, park services attendant at Joseph D. Grant County Park, in the hills east of San Jose. “It was a landslide of weather!”‘ Source

Four of the six people who died when their private plane crashed during a flight from Arizona to Las Vegas on Monday have been identified as Instagram stars, models and nightclub promoters.
Models Mariah Coogan, 23, and Helena Lagos, 22, nightlife promoter Anand 'Happy' Patel, 26, and nightclub host and aspiring pilot James Pedroza, 28, were all on board the Piper PA-24 Comanche when it crashed into a golf course moments after taking off at around 9pm.
They spent the weekend at the Phoenix Lights Festival and were on their way back to Las Vegas.
Before they took off from Scottsdale Airport, Coogan shared videos from the plane on her Instagram story. Source

Crash of hockey team's bus leaves at least 14 dead, town devastated
A western Canadian town of about 6,000 people was left devastated after learning that a bus carrying the town's junior hockey team had collided with a semi-truck while traveling to a playoff game, resulting in at least 14 deaths. At least 15 others on the bus were injured, three of them critically, in the Friday crash, police confirmed. Most of those killed were likely the players on the Humboldt Broncos hockey team, who were between 16 and 20 years old -- though the Royal Canadian Mounted Police [RCMP] would not specify how many of the fatalities were players. Three dead after minibus ploughs into diners outside restaurant leaving dozens injured before 'driver with psychological problems' shoots himself in front of shocked onlookers in German city
A man has shot himself dead after ploughing a minibus into a crowd of people in the German city of Münster, killing three people and leaving 20 injured. Six people are in critical condition and dozens more are injured after the vehicle was driven at high speed towards families outside a traditional German restaurant in the university town, 300 miles west of Berlin. Terrified diners watched as the driver shot and killed himself inside the vehicle. He is believed to be a middle-aged German man with 'psychological problems' and no links to any terrorist organisations. Police are currently searching the driver's apartment for explosives and also investigating reports that two other people were seen fleeing the van after the crash. Dramatic pictures show an area of the city's old town strewn with broken tables and chairs and onlookers running for their lives. Source

Gunman kills three on an Illinois 'stripper-bus' that advertises itself for the 'distinguished gentleman'
A gunman is at large after shooting dead three people aboard an ‘adult themed’ charter bus in Illinois. Rockford Police Chief Dan O'Shea says the driver of the Distinguished Gentleman bus called 911 shortly before 3:30am Saturday, The Rockford Register Star reported. The driver left the shooting site and parked the bus in a fuel lane at a gas station where police then came. O'Shea says a 'suspect on the bus shot other individuals on the bus.' The victims were not immediately identified. Winnebago County Coroner Bill Hintz says he cannot comment on details about the victims or how many times they were shot. The alleged shooter, 22-year-old Raheem D. King, of Rockford, will be charged with four counts of first-degree murder. Source

This is the moment a charismatic award winner danced out of the audience and onto the stage to collect his prize - before dropping down DEAD seconds later.
Vishnu Pandey had a heart attack on stage as he was collecting an award at a bash for travel agents.
The 53-year-old was filmed wiggling and jiggling to the Bollywood music tune as he made his way up to the stage - as he was cheered on by the audience.
Wearing a grey shirt and trousers, he continues to dance round the stage at the event at the Marriott Hotel in Agra, a city made famous for being the home to the Taj Mahal in India. But within a matter of seconds, the businessman from Mumbai, loses his balance and collapses on to the stage, leaving everyone stunned. Audience members quickly rushed to his aid and he was taken to hospital, but he was later declared dead. Police inspector Shailendra Singh said that Mr Pandey had died from a cardiac arrest. One of the organisers, who wished not to named, said: "Everyone present during the function was left shell shocked that we lost such a charismatic and entertaining person within a matter of some seconds." 30-year-old Seminarian Found Dead in Rome R.I.P.
Anthony Freeman, 30, a native of Louisiana, USA, was found dead in his room in the seminary of the Legionaries of Christ in Rome on April 2. He was scheduled to be ordained a deacon in summer. The cause of death is under investigation but according to a press release of the Legionaries Freeman died from natural causes. On Easter Sunday, Freeman bore the cross during the liturgy of Pope Francis in St Peter's. Source

30 March 2018 GOOD FRIDAY
Young Priest Collapses During Good Friday Service and Dies
31-year-old Father Krystian Kotulski died unexpectedly during the Good Friday service (April 30) in the parish-church in Kosobudy in the diocese of Zamość-Lubaczów.
Kotulski lost consciousness after the distribution of Communion. He was immediately brought to the John Paul II hospital in Zamość and put on life support. He died the same day at 9.00 p.m. The exact cause of death is unknown.
Father Kotulski was ordained seven years ago and served as an assistant-priest in Saint Andrew Bobola parish in Kosobudy in eastern Poland.
He was the head of the local foot pilgrimage to Czestochowa and was in charge of the parish youth. Source

MIGRANT 'CARAVAN' OF DOOM!
Mexico Says It Will Disband The Caravan, But Organizers Say Some Of Its Members Will Continue North
Mexico’s National Institute of Immigration (INM) said late Monday that it plans by Wednesday to disband a caravan of hundreds of Central American migrants that has been traveling through Mexico for nine days.
Caravan organizers said, however, they expect at least some of the migrants to continue north to the US border. They estimate that most of them will seek asylum or some type of protection in Mexico or the US.
"At the end of the day these people have the right to ask for asylum,” said Gina Garibo, one of the organizers for Pueblos Sin Fronteras, the volunteer group that organized the caravan.
She denied the caravan was over. "We have to follow through with our promise" to help people gain asylum in the United States or Mexico, she said. Migrants would continue moving but in smaller groups than the caravan.
Another organizer, Alex Mensing, called the Mexican action a victory for the caravan, saying organizers had successfully persuaded the Mexican government to allow caravan members to apply for asylum in the United States and Mexico. Source
