Port Of Beirut

Historical Background

The name of Beirut Port has been mentioned since the fifteenth century BC in the mutual letters of the Pharaohs and the Phoenicians, and during the Roman Era, it was developed into a commercial and economic center. During the Omayyad Era, the Port of Beirut became the center for the First Arabic Fleet. As for the Crusaders Era, the Port of Beirut had an important role in the maritime trade between East and West. This role had been fortified during the Mameluke Era when it was turned into a commercial center visited by pilgrims of the Holy Lands. By the end of the 19th century, the current Port of Beirut had been founded..

Port Of Beirut Concession

On 19/6/1887, the Ottoman authority gave the concession of the Port to an Ottoman company under the name of "Compagnie du Port, des Quais et des Entrepôts de Beyrouth". The concession was later fortified when the company gained from the Customs the sole rights to store and carry all the transit goods passing through the Customs. Constructions works namely a maritime dam to expand and develop the Port were accomplished and the opening on the occasion of the accomplishment of these works was celebrated by the end of 1894, basins were developed and spread between Ras Al Shamiah and Ras Al Mudawar. On 20/5/1925, the “Compagnie du Port, des Quais et des Entrepôts de Beyrouth” got the French nationality.

On the 13/4/1960, the company's name was changed and a 30 years concession was given to a Lebanese company called "Compagnie de Gestion et d'Exploitation du Port de Beyrouth", that worked on expanding Môle 3 and the break water, and finishing quay 14. End Of Concession

On 31/12/1990, the concession ended. The government forced a temporary committee to manage the Port of Beirut. Source

So the same day the explosion occurred at the Port of Beirut the Vatican published the Pope's Prayer Intention for the Maritime World. The Port of Beirut can be considered part of the Maritime world.....

Pope's August prayer intention: people in the maritime world

In his prayer intention for this month of August, Pope Francis urges prayers for seafarers and those working in the maritime world. Pope Francis on Tuesday released a video message containing his prayer intention for the month of August. He invites prayers for those “who work and live from the sea, among them sailors, fishermen and their families”.

The Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network, formerly known as the Apostleship of Prayer, organises and disseminates “The Pope Video”. The network is a pontifical initiative, whose mission is to pray and encounter the challenges facing humanity and the mission of the Church that concern the Holy Father, expressed in his monthly intentions.

Without seafarers, we would starve

“The life of sailors or fishermen and their families is very difficult,” Pope Francis notes in the video message in his native Spanish language. “Sometimes they are victims of forced labor or are left behind in distant ports.”

“The competition of industrial fishing and the problem of pollution make their work even more complicated.” However, the Pope admits, “without the people of the sea, many parts of the world would starve”.

“Let us pray for all those who work and live from the sea, among them sailors, fishermen and their families,” the Pope urges.

Apostleship of the Sea

This is the third time in less than two months that the Holy Father has addressed the issue of maritime workers. On June 12, he sent a video message to the Catholic Church’s Apostleship of the Sea (AOS), in which he thanked the maritime workers and fisherfolk for their important contribution to feeding the people of the world. Remembering the hardship they face, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, the Pope encouraged seafarers in their work, assuring they are not alone or forgotten.

On Sea Sunday, July 12, Pope Francis also greeted "to all those who work at sea, especially those who are far from their loved ones and their country."

Several Christian Church agencies and secular groups mark Sea Sunday each year. They remember and pray for seafarers and their families, drawing attention to their indispensable work and contribution.

Stella Maris Centres

One of the sponsors of Sea Sunday, marked on the second Sunday of July, is the Apostleship of the Sea, that provides hospitality and pastoral care to seafarers, fishers and their families regardless of their nationality, creed, race or culture.

The Apostleship of the Sea has established many seafarer’s centres and hostels around the world, especially in port areas, called Stella Maris Centres, in honour of its patron, Stella Maris, the Latin for the Star of the Sea, one of the many titles honouring Our Lady. Many seafarers have come to know the Apostleship of the Sea as Stella Maris.

The Apostleship of the Sea uses temporary buildings, caravans, even disused containers in the docks to provide 20-hour information and access to telephones or the internet. These facilities enable seafarers to communicate with their families, despite their extremely limited time in port.

In many ports around the world, Stella Maris Centres work in collaboration with seafarers’ centres in partnership with other Christian Churches.

Ministering to seafarers since 1920, the Apostleship of the Sea says it is the largest ship-visiting network in the world. It provides counsel and support to people of the sea in 334 ports with 227 port chaplains in 59 countries.

Upon hearing about Pope Francis dedicating his August prayer intention to seafarers, the Apostleship of the Sea expressed its gratitude to the Holy Father. “Thank you Papa for remembering seafarers, fishers and all those who make a living from the sea”, it wrote in a post on Facebook.

The maritime world

Along with “The Pope Video” of the August prayer intention, the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network also issued an infographic on seafarers, noting that the ocean is one of the most dangerous workplaces on the planet.

Between 2011 and 2020, 745 seafarers have died and 8,611 were injured. In some areas, ships have been the targets of sea pirates.

Among the hazards that maritime workers face are abandonment in distant ports, forced labour, death, injury and the pollution of the sea.

Some 3 billion people in the world depend on marine and coastal biodiversity for their livelihood. Around 200 million people are directly or indirectly employed by the fishing industry. The market value of marine and coastal biodiversity accounts for some 5 per cent of the world’s GDP. Source

Sifting Beirut's rubble for bodies: Over 100 people are killed and 4,000 hurt after 'welder' sparks warehouse fire that ignited 2,700 tons of explosive chemicals 'seized from a ship' causing 3 kiloton blast - a fifth the size of Hiroshima bomb

Survivors of a cataclysmic explosion that devastated the Lebanese capital of Beirut last night were picking through the remains of their city for victims today as the death toll topped 100 and was expected to continue rising, with more than 4,000 wounded.

Beirut, once known as the Paris of the Middle East, resembled a huge scrapyard as the sun rose on Wednesday - with barely a building left unscathed in a blast caused by 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate that exploded with a fifth of the power of the atomic bomb that levelled Hiroshima.

Street after street, neighbourhood after neighbourhood, buildings were left without roofs or windows, their interiors shredded by the force of the explosion - believed to have been sparked when a welder caused a fire at the port, which in turn set light to a warehouse storing chemicals which had been seized from a ship six years ago.

After a night of shock and awe, the full scale of the calamity now facing Lebanon - a country that was already in the midst of an economic crisis - was laid bare at dawn.

The economic cost of the damage is thought to be around $5billion, but the more-pressing human cost includes 300,000 people left homeless along with dozens of missing, and hospitals creaking under the strain of thousands of wounded.

As authorities began totting up the cost of the disaster the threat of recriminations was also hanging in the air, along with smoke from still-burning fires.

Prime Minister Hassan Diab vowed those responsible will 'pay the price' as he declared a two-week state of emergency to deal with the crisis, urging all world leaders and 'friends of Lebanon' to donate aid to the country, adding: 'We are witnessing a real catastrophe.' Source

Pope Francis prays for victims of Lebanon explosion

At the weekly General Audience, Pope Francis prays for victims of a massive explosion in Beirut on Tuesday, which killed dozens and caused serious destruction.

During the weekly General Audience on Wednesday, Pope Francis prayed for Lebanon in the aftermath of the explosion in Beirut on Tuesday.

"Yesterday in Beirut, near the port, there were massive explosions causing dozens of deaths, wounding thousands and causing serious destruction," said the Pope.

“Let us pray for the victims, for their families; and let us pray for Lebanon so that, through the dedication of all its social, political and religious elements, it might face this extremely tragic and painful moment and, with the help of the international community, overcome the grave crisis they are experiencing,” the Pope prayed.

Lebanon is in mourning after a massive explosion ripped through its capital Beirut and surrounding areas on Tuesday evening, killing at least 100 people and injuring thousands, with many feared still trapped under rubble.

According to local authorities, the explosion was caused by tons of ammonium nitrate stored in a warehouse in the port of Lebanon’s capital. Source

Demon Pazuzu

“In the year 1864, Lucifer together with a large number of demons will be unloosed from hell; they will put an end to faith little by little, even in those dedicated to God. They will blind them in such a way, that, unless they are blessed with a special grace, these people will take on the spirit of these angels of hell; several religious institutions will lose all faith and will lose many souls. Our Lady of La Salette 19 Sept. 1846 (Published by Mélanie 1879)

Several will abandon the faith, and a great number of priests and members of religious orders will break away from the true religion; among these people there will even be bishops. Our Lady of La Salette 19 Sept. 1846 (Published by Mélanie 1879)
